Understanding employee experience with housing insecurity

The team at a Minneapolis sports stadium wanted to understand and improve the experiences of unhoused stadium employees.

Challenge

How might we support current and former stadium employees who may be experiencing housing and financial insecurity?

The team at the stadium wanted to understand and improve the experiences of unhoused stadium employees. Moxie partnered with stadium HR staff as well as a Minneapolis based non-profit focused on housing called Envision Community.

Approach

Moxie facilitated weekly sessions with the research team. This team was made up of, stadium staff, lived experience experts from Envision Community and two Moxie designers. The research team led:

  • Qualitative interviews with unhoused employees.
  • Co-creative Ideation Workshop with members of the unhoused community, stadium staff and research team to develop ideas based on the qualitative interviews.
  • Co-creative Concept Workshop to refine top ideas and consider the feasibility, impact and sustainability of top concepts.

Impact

Continued Prototyping: Two of the stadium staff who were a part of the research team expanded their group to include other interested staff and continue to test and pilot concepts that resulted from the research.

Employee Perks Program: The stadium started to prototype the employee perks program. One vendor donated several hundred uniforms and worked with Soles 4 Souls to initiate a shoe donation program.

Connecting the Stadiums: They worked with other stadiums to create a common uniform for people who work across the stadiums.

Resources: They are starting to pull together a resource poster for employees who may need housing and financial assistance.

Strategic Change: The stadium hired a diversity advisor to manage this initiative more formally.
